Some of what makes us go.....

First Principles Thinking / FPT is a powerful method used at Harris Hess to create fresh, correct and impactful solutions for our clients. We use this flexible mode of inquiry that relentlessly pursues the foundations of a problem. In short: We start from the problem’s most basic elements to reexamine whether a better solution might be possible.

Reasoning from first principles helps to ensure that you develop the smartest, leanest possible solution to a problem. It may even result in some astounding innovations. The downside is that it’s a much harder path than reasoning from analogy. A one-question problem now becomes a 100 question problem. But when you’re working on something that truly matters to you, this process of hard thinking will truly be worth it. This approach is not always called for but it's good to know it's available for a critical evaluation.

With so many other smart people working on similar problems (offering products, services or any brand), the easiest way to truly innovate, no matter what field you’re in, is to reason from first principles.

This way of tackling a challenge uses a powerful process that provides the method for discovery of fresh, overlooked, rational paths to solution for any given problem. We often use this approach in our client work with challenges as simple as design, to complex as core identity and deep brand concept and profile.

You won't hear this in the conference room at Harris Hess:
"Well, whats been done before? let's research it and switch it around into something new and different...."

But, you will hear this...
"Okay, what are the fundamental truths of this issue? What core principles are bred into it's heart and soul? Building on these things, what is the most direct, efficient line to a sound, timeless solution. Let's go step by step and build...."

Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX illustrates this concept well:
"The normal way we conduct our lives is we reason by analogy," he said. "With analogy, we are doing this because it's like something else that was done, or it is like what other people are doing. With first principles, you boil things down to the most fundamental truths … and then reason up from there."
